Radharc na Mara opened our nurture room in September 2022.The idea behind nurture rooms are that they provide a short-term focused intervention to deal with non-cognitive issues that are blocking learning for some children. The nurture room is staffed by Special Educational Teacher Ms. Deirdre Sheedy and SNA Laurie McCarrick. The room is a relaxing environment to help children regulate each day and to assist them in accessing all aspects of the curriculum. We pride ourselves on the room and its amazing decor. and design The room was designed by Ms. Day's husband Brian with the assistance of Ms. Curran and Ms. Sheedy and Laurie. We are eternally grateful to SVP Galway and to the Bons Secours Hospital for their wonderfully kind donations that made this building project possible.
Nurture explained
Nurture is a tried and tested way of relating to children that helps them develop vital social skills, confidence and self-esteem, and become ready to learn.
The concept of nurture highlights the importance of social environments – who you are with and not who you are born to – and its significant influence on social and emotional skills, wellbeing and behaviour.
The nurturing approach to education offers a range of opportunities for children and young people to engage with missing early nurturing experiences, giving them the social and emotional skills to do well at school and with peers, and to develop their resilience and self-confidence. It encourages pupils to take pride in achieving - addressing the social and emotional needs that can hamper learning. (https://www.nurtureuk.org/what-is-nurture)
