Green Schools Committee Radharc na Mara has been part of the Green-Schools programme for over 15 years. We recently received our 9th green flag for working on the theme Global Citizenship and Travel. We have a very active Green-Schools Committee who work hard every year informing pupils, staff and parents of our actions. We do regular community litter picks, take part in workshops, run poster competitions, gardening and lots more. We are always learning, informing and involving. |
About Green Schools
The Green Schools programme covers many different aspects of the environment. We learn about lots of different themes, such as litter and waste, energy, water and travel.
There are 10 themes in the programme and we are currently working on the 10th theme - Global Citizenship Food and Biodiversity.
The Food and Biodiversity theme focuses on:
- Local actions - what can we do at school and at home.
- Learn about growing food - different classes get involved in growing potatoes, carrots, peas, lettuces, strawberries etc.
- Use organic methods and be wildlife friendly.
- Learn about the biodiversity on our school grounds.
- Create a wildlife area on the school grounds to encourage biodiversity.
- Learn about global food production, food miles and food waste.
Work continues throughout our school community to achieve our next flag.
The Green-Schools Committee enjoy meeting members of the local community. Local gardener Jerry gave us a tour of Ballybane Community Garden and we learned a lot about growing fruit and vegetables!
New Oak Tree SaplingMr. O’Dwyer, the former principal of St.Michael’s and Seed Savers kindly donated an oak tree sapling to our school. This special oak tree sapling was grown from the seed of the very old Brian Boru oak tree in Raheen woods near Scariff. On Thursday March 3rd, 2022 we planted the oak tree sapling on the grounds of Radharc na Mara. The Green-Schools committee, Des, Gerry and Senior Infants were there for the occasion. Make sure you walk around the school grounds to visit it. It is planted beside the playground at Tír na nÓg. The Green-Schools committee planted some primroses and daffodils around the tree also for everyone to enjoy. |
