We want the children in Radharc na Mara to develop a love of reading and writing from their very first day at school.
Reading and writing are central to the school day. All children read in school every day in many different ways. They may read silently, read with an adult or in a guided reading group. Others may listen to an audio story or complete a book review on their latest book.
We know that children need to have meaningful reasons, motivations and audiences for their writing. We provide them with a range of life experiences and educational visits to extend and enrich their learning, giving them something to want to write about.
A very important part of the day is our class story, a carefully chosen book / novel read aloud by the class teacher.
We also encourage our children to read at home every evening as part of their home learning.
In our school we follow programmes such as First Steps and Reading Recovery. The children also enjoy buddy reading classes. We are also very lucky to be situated close to Ballybane Library and love to go on visits to choose books or listen to authors.
Some literacy lessons are taught through team teaching. We are incredibly lucky to have a highly skilled staff who tailor their approaches to teaching literacy for each pupil.
